The Clinicians’ Early Development Program (CEDP) provides support and mentorship to dentists and dental therapists early in their careers, working in metro, rural or regional settings within SA Dental.

We are proud to acknowledge the support of the Rural Oral Health Workforce Strategy in developing and implementing this program in its pilot year.

In 2024, the program has expanded to support and nurture both dentists and dental therapists in the early stages of their oral health careers. The program helps to consolidate their knowledge and clinical skills as a recently graduated or early career dental practitioner working in SA Dental, through a structured development program, mentorship, and self-reflective practice.

The CEDP includes the following components:

• Structured program covering a spectrum of topics including public health, treatment planning, prevention, restorative, periodontics, endodontics and orthodontics.
• Attendance at specialist clinics for observation or, in some instances, hands-on experience:
  • Special Needs Unit, Adelaide Dental Hospital (ADH)
  • Special Restorative Unit & Dental Laboratory, ADH
  • Oral Maxillofacial Surgery Unit, ADH
  • Orthodontic Unit, ADH
  • General Anaesthetic consultation session and theatre attendance

• Participation in group case studies and presentations to fellow CEDP participants and organising committee members
• Preparation of individual case studies and presentations to fellow CEDP participants and organising committee members
• Attendance in online meetings with peers and, if required, mentor and CEDP organising committee members
• Local mentorship meetings and feedback with a local mentor throughout the year
